The State of Games, Ep. 152 – The One About the Fate of the Galaxy, Pt. 2
Five years ago on Memorial Day weekend, six gamers gathered to duke it out for galactic supremacy in Twilight Imperium: Third Edition and we recorded the whole thing for The State of Games. Ever since that incredible 12-hour slugfest we had wanted to do it again and the release of Twilight Imperium: Fourth Edition gave us all a perfect excuse. And, so, I convinced two of the veterans of the old game and two TI newbies over to the house, threw a pork butt on the smoker, and got down to business in figuring out who would reign supreme. Spoiler alert: It was awesome. Enjoy!
PICS OF THE ACTION!
The combatants assemble to decide who will rule Mecatol Rex, and the galaxy! From left to right: Linus as Yssaril Tribes, Matt Wolfe as Naalu Collective, Dan Patriss as Yin Brotherhood, Daniel Solis as Universities of Jol-Nar.
In the early years of the campaign… the state of the galaxy after Round 1.
The score after Round 2. Things started off slow, but escalated quickly!
Matt roleplaying his wily snake people by debating the finer points of a public objective.
The mighty Xxcha Kingdom spreading peace with diplomacy throughout the galaxy.
The Yssaril invasion of Mecatol Rex! Linus would easily kick out Matt’s Naalu Collective to assume the head of the galactic council and vex us all for a couple of rounds.
There was a lot of green on the board by mid-game but Linus’s Yssaril Tribes were about to change that.
In one of the strangest deals I’ve seen in Twilight Imperium, Dan convinced Daniel to sacrifice one of his fighters to the Yin flagship so that Dan could fulfill an objective.
In a fit of wild overcompensation, Linus sends half the Yssaril fleet over to capture one planet next to the Xxcha homeworld. He fulfilled that objective, though!
The state of the galaxy during the climactic 6th round!
A capture moment of the Universities of Jol-Nar suicide run against the Yin Brotherhood’s flagship. It was an incredibly noble but futile effort to secure the win.
The state of the galaxy at end game. Naalu had recaptured Mecatol Rex, Xxcha had recaptured the worlds lost to the Yssaril, and Jol-Nar had researched the far ends of space.
The final scores in an incredibly tight game. One of the best games of Twilight Imperium I’ve played. I can’t wait to do it again!
