The State of Games, Ep. 101 – The One About PrezCon 2016

The early part of the year tends to be cold and convention-less, but there is one bright oasis every February – PrezCon! This is the one convention every year where none of us have any responsibilities other than to relax, enjoy time with our friends, and play a whole boatload of games. So that’s exactly what we did again this year, and it was awesome. Come, let us tell you about it. Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 100 – The One About the State of Games

It’s hard to believe that almost exactly five years ago we plunged headlong into the podcasting world with the debut of The State of Games. It was just Cherilyn and me back in those wild west days of yesteryear, and it really feels like it was two blinks in the past. There’s been so much change between then and now, both in the hobby, in business, and in personal life, but at least one thing has stayed the same – being able to speak my mind about my favorite things and bring board gaming love to so many more. Dexterity Challenge Winners!

Back in the spring of 2015 we put out a very important call – we wanted your best dexterity game designs! 58 of you answered the call and none of you disappointed; we had an incredibly diverse and interesting group of entries that we somehow had to pare down. When the dust settled we ended up with 11 wonderful games to test out and somehow select the winners. Believe me, it wasn’t easy. Each and every one of the final games sent to us were charming, fun, delightful and, above all, incredibly dexterous! Without further ado, here are the top four designs that took home the prizes. Happy New Year, dear readers! It’s officially 2016, but no journey forward for us would be complete without our traditional look back at the gaming past. The State of Games, Ep. 98 – The One About the Games of 2015

It’s that time of the year again – time to look forward by looking back! Yes, a new year is upon us but before we settle into the games of 2016, it’s best that we talk about what we loved about 2015. It was an interesting year; some gamers complained that there were few stand-out titles as in years’ past; to that I can only say it was tough for all of us not to have a list of honorable mentions a mile long that we wanted to honor! So settle in, listen up, and let us regale you with our best of 2015, and the holidays! Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 97 – The One About Location, Location, Location

Sometimes a podcast member goes AWOL – this time it was TC Petty, even though we told him where and when we’d be recording. That’s ok, because Darrell, Jessica and I had even more opportunity to get a word in edgewise! This was a fun one with a rapid fire session, and lots of discussion about time and space. It’s almost as if we had a Time Lord present! Read More  Read More

So stoke the fire, grab some hot cocoa, and start your holiday shopping list with these great games. May all your rolls be sixes and your... Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 92 – The One About Taking Care of Business

We typically do a good job of podcasting via Skype, but the best results come from when we are all in person. Thankfully we had the opportunity while taking care of business in St. Louis this past weekend. If I had my druthers, we’d record in person all the time, but that could only happen if we managed to organize that board game compound we’ve talked about for the longest time. One day, maybe – but, for now, we’ll settle for the joy of looking each other in the eye while we record for special occasions, even if they are few and far between. We hope you all enjoy one of those special times like this. Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 89 – The One About So Here’s The Thing

We weren’t even supposed to be here today. We all blame TC; he just wanted to quickly talk about a few random things on his mind. As is our custom, though, a few quick, random things turned into an hour and a half of weird awesomeness and lots of rants. So settle in, pop some popcorn, get ready to tell the kids to put their earmuffs on, and enjoy! Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 87 – The One About Growing New Gamers

One of the many benefits of our recent survey was to ask listeners what they’d really like for us to talk about, and plenty of you requested tips for getting new gamers into the hobby. We’ve responded with a great episode on how experienced gamers can best evangelize to those new gamers, either in your Friendly Local Game Store, or amongst your less-experienced friends and family. Hopefully you’ll all find this guide to growing new gamers helpful as we all work to build upon this great hobby! Read More  Read More
