The State of Games, Ep. 67 – The One About Guilty Pleasures

stateofgameslogonewThere are certain times when being bad is really, really good. That applies to B-Movies, richly decadent desserts and certain TV shows of the mostly-reality variety. Depending on your gaming circles, and gaming culture in general, this can also apply to board games. There are some days when you want to tell your Mediterranean trading game-loving circle of friends that they’re just going to have to trudge through Twilight Imperium for 10 hours – and this is our love song to just such a time.

On “Potato Salad,” I have to say that I looked at it the same way I looked at “The Emperor’s New Clothes” – just a gag, something funny, maybe throw ’em a buck for the joke, and … wait a minute, HOW much money did they raise??

As for guilty pleasures, I was really glad to hear Chris mention Monopoly. That’s my dirty little secret. I know that the first part of the game (roll, move, buy property) is boring, and the last part of the game (roll, move, pay rent) is boring, but it’s that middle part, when you try to score that sweet deal that gets you a better monopoly than your opponent, that’s where the game is. It is, after all, a “real estate trading game,” and that’s the heart of the game. Unfortunately, it takes way to long to set up the deal and then way too long to play out the results. The whole game can hinge on one trading decision. But I love it.

Also Illuminati. Actually, I got into the collectible card game, Illuminati: New World Order. But I just can’t get it to the table; I only know one or two other guys with cards, and they usually want to play something else.

The other CCG that is my guilty pleasure is Yu-Gi-Oh. I kind of joked about this on Geek All Stars, but when my kids were into Pokemon and then Yu-Gi-Oh, playing with them was a lot of fun. (They never quite got into Magic: The Gathering the same way.)

Okay, finally, my last guilty pleasure is Munchkin. Again, my kids are my excuse to play this silly little game, but I like it, and I’m not ashamed of it.

Ah, guilty pleasures for board gamers – not sure if this counts, but I enjoy a MtG booster card draft with friends every now and again. Also, I played Monopoly today, but that’s mainly because my daughter requests it periodically.
