The State of Games, Ep. 131: The One About Getting Nasty

Sometimes you’re the windshield and sometimes you’re the bug – I’m talking about games with a little bit of spite in them! Whether you love ’em or hate ’em, mean games have been around for a long, long time (heck, Sorry has been around since the 1920s) so we thought it would be fun to take a look at the dark side of gaming. Don’t worry, we won’t be mean, and I promise you lots of fun! Read More  Read More

Thanks for 7 Wonderful Years!

Greetings, dear readers! It’s been awhile. I’ve missed you. I’ve gathered you here to celebrate the anniversary of Dice Hate Me. Exactly seven years ago today, I posted my first game review on dicehateme.com – and since then what a long, strange trip it’s been. Over the past three years, this site has been mostly a repository and rally point for The State of Games podcast. The podcast has evolved over the past few years and I still enjoy gathering to talk and laugh about boardgames, but I miss sharing my passion for games and the hobby through written journalism. So, from this point forward, consider the old Dice Hate Me back in... Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 100 – The One About the State of Games

It’s hard to believe that almost exactly five years ago we plunged headlong into the podcasting world with the debut of The State of Games. It was just Cherilyn and me back in those wild west days of yesteryear, and it really feels like it was two blinks in the past. There’s been so much change between then and now, both in the hobby, in business, and in personal life, but at least one thing has stayed the same – being able to speak my mind about my favorite things and bring board gaming love to so many more. The State of Games, Ep. 94 – The One About What’s In a Name

We love it when fans of the podcast send us topic ideas, and this time around Nat Levan took over the show with a fantastic outline about game names. We may have gotten a little carried away, but we think you’ll all have fun, nonetheless. Keep sending us those ideas! After all, this is your show, too, dear listeners. Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 76: The One About the Fireside

So, what to do – it’s the holiday season and we don’t want to be lost in the hubbub of every other podcast talking about games for the family gathered around the Christmas table. Then the bright idea struck – what about all those poor souls who lose power during a snowstorm for the holidays? Yeah, that’s the ticket! And, so, we put our stockinged heads together and came up with some of the best and brightest for when you don’t exactly have the brightest of circumstances. Enjoy! Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Episode 72 – The One About Making Good Decisions

Making decisions can sometimes be hard, but when you make a really good decision, not much is more satisfying. In boardgames we all make decisions constantly – what to play, how to play, how to react when we get beat. But there are also a lot of decisions that are made outside of the game, during production, design, and publication. This podcast is about all of those decisions – good, bad, and downright ugly. Dice Hate Me 54-Card Challenge Finalists!

The call for card games from Dice Hate Me was heeded – in a very big way! We received over 100 entries into the Dice Hate Me 54-Card Challenge, which was far above and beyond expectations. The massive amount of entries meant that the design community was energized and inspired to create something special, but it also meant that the competition was fierce, and judging took a very long time. Originally, the plan was to have six finalists to be judged at Unpub; since there were so many great entries, we’ve decided to narrow the finalists to 15! These 15 games are to be played by independent play testers, designers and various judges during... Read More
