The State of Games, Ep. 146: The One About Expanding Your World
Love ’em or hate ’em, board game expansions are a huge part of the industry. Some companies survive just on expansions for their most popular titles, which can sometimes lead to consumer fatigue. They can often feel like cash grabs, but on occasion an expansion is released that not only provides more content for a game – it also makes that game better. So settle in Dear Listeners – we’re here to separate the suck from the essentials, all just for you.

The Catapult? Really, Chris? I’m with Darrell and TC on this one. Oh! and the farmers are one of the best parts of Carcassonne. We’ll just have to agree to disagree on that one.
The Ticket to Ride: USA 1910 expansion is a must for me since it adds additional routes and almost as importantly it adds normal sized train cards. Fleet: Arctic Bounty, which you mentioned, is also a favorite. On both your recommendation and that of friend, I finally found a copy of the Souks to add to my copy of Yspahan. So thanks for that.
Yeah, I love the catapult! It’s totally unnecessary – just like the farmers! 😉
Ah, yes, we totally should have mentioned 1910. I usually forget about it because it’s such an essential expansion that we never play without it.
Glad you found a copy of the Souks! It’s such a subtle expansion, but a good one!
