The State of Games, Ep. 104 – The One About Unpub 6

I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of the Unpublished Games Festival since way back at Unpub 2, and it’s hard to believe just how big this little big convention has gotten. Way back in the day it was a few designers huddled around some tables in a VFW hall, and now it’s a ton of gamers from all over invading the Baltimore Convention Center. It’s awesome! I can’t wait to see where Unpub 10 is going to be. Maybe the moon! Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 103 – The One About Playtesting

Game design can often be a complex process that involves many people, not just the designer. One of the most important parts of the process is playtesting, and getting the game in front of quality playtesters is paramount. With Unpub 6 right around the corner, we thought it’d be cool to talk about how to get the most out of playtesting on both sides of the process. Oh, and you all should come to Unpub 6. Because it’s cool. Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 102 – The One About the Takeover

The State of Games has come a long way in its five years of existence, and I’ve enjoyed every last moment guiding it along with my co-hosts. But there comes a time when you just have to let go. No, we’re not canceling the podcast – just handing it over to some new blood! Jessica is taking over structure and editing and things are finally going to get organized around here. The State of Games, Ep. 101 – The One About PrezCon 2016

The early part of the year tends to be cold and convention-less, but there is one bright oasis every February – PrezCon! This is the one convention every year where none of us have any responsibilities other than to relax, enjoy time with our friends, and play a whole boatload of games. So that’s exactly what we did again this year, and it was awesome. Come, let us tell you about it. Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 100 – The One About the State of Games

It’s hard to believe that almost exactly five years ago we plunged headlong into the podcasting world with the debut of The State of Games. It was just Cherilyn and me back in those wild west days of yesteryear, and it really feels like it was two blinks in the past. There’s been so much change between then and now, both in the hobby, in business, and in personal life, but at least one thing has stayed the same – being able to speak my mind about my favorite things and bring board gaming love to so many more. The State of Games, Ep. 96 – The One About BGGCon 2015

As the year winds to a close, we focus on the last of the big shows – BGGCon, in Dallas, TX. Every hardcore gamer that has a forum handle in the hobby shows up for this particular convention, which always makes for an interesting time. This go-round, the whole core DHMG crew was here and Darrell, TC, and myself got a chance to experience the show together. This is our story. Dun Dun! Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 93 – The One About Going to Essen

Although summer has passed and that means the end of the big game conventions here in the US, autumn brings even bigger things overseas; that, of course, is Spiel in Essen, Germany, a ginormous show where everyone who is anyone bring their wares to show off and sale. I’ve been wanting to go to Essen for most of my adult life and I’m finally getting my chance – although I have absolutely no idea what’s in store for me – except for beer and brats! The State of Games, Ep. 92 – The One About Taking Care of Business

We typically do a good job of podcasting via Skype, but the best results come from when we are all in person. Thankfully we had the opportunity while taking care of business in St. Louis this past weekend. If I had my druthers, we’d record in person all the time, but that could only happen if we managed to organize that board game compound we’ve talked about for the longest time. One day, maybe – but, for now, we’ll settle for the joy of looking each other in the eye while we record for special occasions, even if they are few and far between. We hope you all enjoy one of those special times like this. Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 87 – The One About Growing New Gamers

One of the many benefits of our recent survey was to ask listeners what they’d really like for us to talk about, and plenty of you requested tips for getting new gamers into the hobby. We’ve responded with a great episode on how experienced gamers can best evangelize to those new gamers, either in your Friendly Local Game Store, or amongst your less-experienced friends and family. Hopefully you’ll all find this guide to growing new gamers helpful as we all work to build upon this great hobby! Read More  Read More

The State of Games, Ep. 86: The One About Origins 2015

For the past four years, I’ve had the pleasure of hosting a booth for Dice Hate Me Games at the Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio. During that time I’ve learned a lot, met many wonderful people, and introduced even more to the joys and wonders of DHMG titles. It’s a wonderful convention in which I can both run a booth and still have time to talk to convention-goers, fans, designers and publishers. 2015 was a great year at Origins, and I hope to be able to do the same for many years to come!
